Look at areas that look like they have water damage or other types of damage. Both interior and exterior areas that are damaged will need to be fully repaired before painting. Old homes are often full of surprises when this step is taken so be prepared. A reputable painting company will make sure that all repairs (especially where water, mildew or rot is concerned) are fully completed before painting.

If a contractor is confident about the way they work, they’ll prove it by asking you to judge for yourself, not only at the end of a job, but while work is in progress. Things to look for: Work vehicles: are they clean, organized and professional? The painters: are they neatly dressed and groomed? Materials: are ladders, scaffolding, drop cloths and electrical equipment in good condition? Is work being done carefully so as not to damage landscaping or property?

Another great tutorial. You guys really put out some great and helpful posts. I was especially happy to see that you kept the popcorn ceiling! I feel like there is so much pressure to get rid of your popcorn ceiling if you have it, but it is so expensive especially if you have asbestos. It is really such a minor thing I don’t think it should get as much flak as it does. Besides, I am convinced if I wait long enough, the popcorn ceilings will make a comeback;)
I’ve been painting homes for over 15 years and I think you’ve nailed it: PREPPING. Most DIY’ers and home owners have little to no knowledge about the amount of time and cost it takes to prepare a project prior to painting. Your Article did a Great job in explaining some of the procedures that are necessary for a truly professional paint job. All to often the prepping is weak or non existing. As you pointed out, covering badly stained walls or ceilings with a coat of Kiln is probably not enough. Just wondering how many hours were spent in the prepping of your project? Great details and information. House Painting NY April 07, 2021

Two-tone walls offer homeowners a great chance to step outside of their comfort zones. Rather than relying on a single color, the lower half of the wall is painted differently from the upper half. Generally, this will be more expensive, ranging from $250 to $500 per wall, than painting a wall one color because you will be using multiple cans of paint. Plus, the painters will have to be far more careful when applying the paint. When considering painting styles, be sure to think about how the colors will interact with one another and the rest of the room.
We recommend obtaining a written, detailed outline of the surface preparation process before you hire your next painter. Any good residential painting service worth considering should include detailed prep details in their estimate.
There is now one section explaining how to take measurements before painting a house, and another dedicated to working with an interior decorator.
Here are a few considerations to make when trying to decide on paint types below.
The size will also affect how much primer and paint you’ll need to purchase. As a reference, one gallon of any Behr paint will cover approximately 250 to 400 square feet (one coat). Your home will most likely need two coats, especially if you’re choosing a darker color.
