To figure out your home’s paintable surface area, first multiply your house’s exterior perimeter by its height. Then, measure the area of all doors, windows, shutters, and other parts of your house not included in the painting project. Subtract those numbers from the overall area of your house, and you’ll have a close estimate of your project’s size.
You’ll use the small 4″ inch roller & roller frame for all the trim on your house. The trim on our house was only 3″ inches wide and fascia boards were around 7″ so using a regular size roller here is a little bulky.
The next option was using oil based primer. That stuff is not fun to work with. The fumes are not fun to work around (be sure to open windows!), and you can’t wash it off without using more chemicals. Fortunately somebody suggested we try bleaching the stains, which sounded a bit more feasible and manageable. So we tried it. Dawning coveralls and face masks, and armed with a pump garden sprayer filled with diluted bleach (mostly water with a couple capfuls of bleach), we attacked the stains. After a couple spray downs, the yellow started to disappear! For a couple of days, we misted the ceiling, waited a couple hours and repeated. Most stains were taken care of, the rest were dissolved enough to prime over.
Before we begin, we’ll protect floors and furniture and prep walls and surfaces by filling voids and cracks, hand scraping and sanding, and spot priming repairs. Only then will we begin to paint, using only the finest quality paints and finishes from Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and PPG.
