Not only temperature levels, but moisture levels must also be carefully considered. Mild humidity provides the best climate for exterior house painting. Again, there are exceptions, and painting contractors should be able to offer solutions for those who must paint in weather that isn’t perfect. However, rain is a deal breaker. If paint is applied in the rain—or even made to dry in the rain—expect a disastrous result! Bottom line: don’t paint in the rain or near the rain unless you’re interested in a splotchy, bubbly, and runny look (joke).
Follow these steps to prepare the exterior and create an ideal surface for a long-lasting paint job: Cover surrounding plants and water features with drop cloths. Remove them daily to prevent damaging the plants. Hand clean or pressure wash all paintable surfaces. Scrape off loose and flaking paint and fill any holes or dents with caulk. Repair and sand any damaged siding. Remove old caulk from windows and door trim and replace with paintable exterior caulk. Allow all surfaces to dry. Prime bare areas or the entire surface if needed. Allow each coat to dry before painting the next coat. HomeGuide Exterior Painting Pro Survey - 48 Professionals. (2021). Craftsman National Estimator Cloud. (2021). Josh, some great work on the renovation, it’s come up really nicely! It’s good to see you stressing the importance of not taking short cuts when it comes to prepping and removing wallpaper. It definitely does lead to more problems down the road when done incorrectly. However there is a caveat on that. If the wallpaper is in good condition and you have primed it properly, you can get away with painting over wallpaper. On a few jobs where the client has been on a tight budget, we have used an oil based primer to really seal the adhesive and keep then moisture from the paint away. Has worked well and we haven’t got any call backs. But I’d still agree with you and always push for stripping back wallpaper where possible. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure as the saying goes. Also, would love to see how your painted popcorn ceilings came up. We call it ‘vermiculite’. Its quite old school and we come across it in school jobs and old buildings occasionally. Jake Beals May 09, 2020
The weather and climate of your locality can also have a great impact on your paint and affect how long your exterior house painting job lasts. For instance, if your home doesn’t have trees to shelter your house, its paint may fade away more quickly than a home surrounded by trees.
As an example, walls are measured in square feet while interior trim is measured in linear feet.
One of the benefits of painting an entire home interior at once is the ability to create a “color story” or plan for the way that color will flow from room to room. By creating a color story, you can figure out how to best complement each space with the color of the walls. Even if you plan on painting your home in various shades of white or off-white, there is still a fair amount of planning that should go into the project to ensure that you get the results you want.

For some homeowners, hiring a painting contractor feels like stepping up to the roulette wheel: it’s a gamble with unknown odds. Most give up early in the hope of finding a great painter and a great price. However, you can eliminate the risk by following these simple rules for finding a stellar painting contractor who can complete your home improvement project.
When hiring an interior painter, do your research, ask plenty of questions, and get at least three quotes from contractors with a good reputation. Getting Interior Painting Quotes Research painting contractors near you, or ask friends, family, and neighbors for references. Read reviews and check out their previous work on HomeGuide, Google, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Contact at least three professionals for price quotes.Always get painting estimates in-person, and be skeptical of low bids. Verify their licensing, insurance, and experience. Never pay cash and figure out a reasonable payment plan upfront. Get a detailed contract in writing, including prep work and cleanup. Remember, the lowest bid is not always the best value since they might use cheap materials or unskilled labor. Questions To Ask Interior Painters How long have you been painting? Is your license and insurance up to date? Will you be using subcontractors? How many painting jobs have you completed in the last year? Can I have a list of references with contact information? What paints do you recommend? If you get paint on the furniture, are you liable? Do you offer a warranty or guarantee your work? Pray, Richard. “2019 National Construction Estimator.” 2019. PDF file. Secondly, think about how many coats of paint you want to do. If you are priming the walls first, one coat might be enough, whereas two coats are often needed if walls are not primed.
You can tell a lot about a painting contractor by his warranty. Well-known contractors with established reputations are respected by paint suppliers who, in turn, pass on extended or even lifetime warranties on their paints. This is because they know the product will be applied the right way. For any number of reasons, less experienced contractors may not have valuable relationships with suppliers.
Closets, pantries, and nooks are relatively easy to paint and do not add a ton of additional costs to a job. Don’t forget, larger walk-in closets can cost more to paint based on their size and amount of wall space not covered by shelving. Painting closets can cost as little as $60 – $280 for smaller or medium-sized spaces. The pricing for walk-in closets can be compared to bathrooms with similar sq ft dimensions Costs can also vary if you add trim, ceilings, or additional preparation or repairs
