The average cost to paint a small house sits between $700 and $1000, which is what most homeowners report spending. However, average cost may vary according to different factors, but the most influential factor is the size of your home. A 1,500 square-feet home will cost less to paint than, say, a 5,000 or 6,000 square-feet home. The number of stories your home has may increase the price, but $1,000 is a safe starting point.
The other thing you will definitely want to do before you paint your exterior is to sand or scrape off all chipped paint from the surface.

Yes, you can mix interior and exterior paints as long as they have the same base. You can even mix a flat and a semi-gloss paint as long as they are both either oil-based or water-based. Be sure to combine both paints in a clean container and thoroughly mix the paints.
Awesome post! I just wanted to add a couple tips about cleaning brushes that might be helpful. If you’re painting and are coming back for second coats later the same day, you can put your brush in a ziplock bag to keep it from drying out while you’re taking a break. When cleaning your brushes, use Murphy Oil Soap, it really helps to get the paint off and is eco friendly. You can even soak brushes in it and clean them later on if you’re a giant procrastinator like I am 🙂 I love following your progress with this house and am so stoked to see the finished product! Cheers and have a great day! Alexandra February 25, 2015 Jill @ Champagne for Everyday February 25, 2015

But you really can’t afford to contract the wrong company. Not doing your homework may leave you under the assumption that you have hired a painting contractor when in reality you have just hired a painter. When you hire just a painter, you as the homeowner have taken all responsibilities of a contractor.
Consider things like trim and doors. You might want to re-paint worn areas or strip and stain or re-stain. These parts of older homes are key to their character. To keep trim, woodwork and doors looking beautiful in the years to come, they’ll need to be prepped meticulously. The exterior of older homes may have many layers of paint built up. You will need to decide if you will be OK with cratering, ridges and different levels of paint under the final product. It is common to just scrape the loose paint off leaving an alligator skin effect on your final painting surface. You can see an extreme example of this in the picture below.
You can avoid the steep learning curve and just benefit from my years of experience - simply follow the steps in the color lessons and painting tutorials on this site.
