There are a few different ways to go about getting the square footage of the exterior of your home.
It is doesn’t matter where it is flat finish or gloss - the cost of painting a house won’t be quoted based of paint sheen. But labor expenses might be different whether if you will use water or oil based paint. Many wood elements in the room like moldings, baseboards or doors can be painted using oil-based paint what might increase the labor cost.

Think through any areas that might need a deep clean or primed before painting. Ceiling painting in particular can be overlooked at this stage in the process. Older popcorn ceilings might need removed, smoothed, primed and painted. Or some ceilings may not have been cleaned in years, which means new paint may not adhere properly.
Your time is valuable, and painting can take a considerable amount of time. Is your work or personal schedule jam-packed? Does your job require you to travel away from home often? If you just bought a new house, painting the exterior could hinder your unpacking efforts and settle in. Fitting such a big project into a schedule that has little downtime can be challenging.
Estimate the size of the house body by measuring the perimeter of the house. Then, measure the height of the house from the foundation to the roofline, excluding gables. Multiply the perimeter of the home by the height. TIP: For a more accurate estimate, subtract doors and windows from your wall area calculation. An average window is 15 square feet and an average door is 20 square feet.

It should be noted that the cost per room does have a wide variable due to the many factors that can alter the overall cost per room, such as the size of the surface that needs to be painted, price of the paint, condition of the room walls, and so on. For instance, if the painters will need to resurface your wall due to holes and cracks, this will add to the overall costs.
Labor and material costs vary from project to project, so house size isn’t the only thing that affects your overall price. Different kinds of paint will cost more or less per gallon, certain contractors will charge higher hourly rates, and the material of your siding will determine how much paint you have to use.
Interior paints come in five different finishes: flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high gloss. High-gloss paints cost more, but are great for kitchens and bathrooms and are easier to clean. Flat or eggshell sheens are best for bedrooms, halls, and living rooms and hide flaws better than glossier paints.
A typical 3,000 square foot home that is two stories tall will cost in the range of $4,000 – $6,000 for power washing, priming, and two coat repainting.

The next option was using oil based primer. That stuff is not fun to work with. The fumes are not fun to work around (be sure to open windows!), and you can’t wash it off without using more chemicals. Fortunately somebody suggested we try bleaching the stains, which sounded a bit more feasible and manageable. So we tried it. Dawning coveralls and face masks, and armed with a pump garden sprayer filled with diluted bleach (mostly water with a couple capfuls of bleach), we attacked the stains. After a couple spray downs, the yellow started to disappear! For a couple of days, we misted the ceiling, waited a couple hours and repeated. Most stains were taken care of, the rest were dissolved enough to prime over.
