Another tip! If you’re painting textured walls, even edge lock tape won’t always do the trick! You can put the tape on the wall and then go over the edges with a thin stripe or PAINTABLE clear caulking! One part will come up with the tape, the other stays on the wall under the paint, and keeps the paint from seeping under the edge of the tape. Consider things like trim and doors. You might want to re-paint worn areas or strip and stain or re-stain. These parts of older homes are key to their character. To keep trim, woodwork and doors looking beautiful in the years to come, they’ll need to be prepped meticulously.The exterior of older homes may have many layers of paint built up. You will need to decide if you will be OK with cratering, ridges and different levels of paint under the final product. It is common to just scrape the loose paint off leaving an alligator skin effect on your final painting surface. You can see an extreme example of this in the picture below.
After your walls have been painted, wait at least two weeks before attempting to clean them to allow the paint to cure. Dust your walls regularly with a soft cloth and the vacuum brush attachment on your cleaner.
By the same token, a higher grade or paint finish might be needed in areas prone to constant wear and tear and high traffic areas. A painter is likely to choose a high-grade paint for a doorway, for example, which will be in constant contact with passersby, pets, toddlers, kids and other forces that wear on the paint finish.

Awesome post! I just wanted to add a couple tips about cleaning brushes that might be helpful. If you’re painting and are coming back for second coats later the same day, you can put your brush in a ziplock bag to keep it from drying out while you’re taking a break. When cleaning your brushes, use Murphy Oil Soap, it really helps to get the paint off and is eco friendly. You can even soak brushes in it and clean them later on if you’re a giant procrastinator like I am 🙂 I love following your progress with this house and am so stoked to see the finished product!
