Before we begin, we’ll protect floors and furniture and prep walls and surfaces by filling voids and cracks, hand scraping and sanding, and spot priming repairs. Only then will we begin to paint, using only the finest quality paints and finishes from Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and PPG.
Another tip! If you’re painting textured walls, even edge lock tape won’t always do the trick! You can put the tape on the wall and then go over the edges with a thin stripe or PAINTABLE clear caulking! One part will come up with the tape, the other stays on the wall under the paint, and keeps the paint from seeping under the edge of the tape. Just remember to keep it thin so you don’t see it on the wall! Hazel February 25, 2015

Painting your home is like buying a car (but hopefully not that expensive!) or buying new furniture. Not only does an awesome paint job say a lot about you, but it’s also a big investment that deserves a lot of consideration. Just like buying a car, you typically get what you pay for—so you want to consider a few factors going into it—like who the manufacturer is (the paint), who made it (the painter), and what condition it is in (the prep).

There were a couple things that needed to be done before I even started thinking about painting. Since the house was built in 1921, I wanted to check for lead. You can find lead testers in any home improvement store. I followed the directions on the label, did some tests, and found that the house was lead free! That was a relief because removing lead is a huge hassle, requiring professionals, special suits, and more tests. No thank you. If you do happen to test for lead and it shows positive, you can contact the national lead hotline, which should get you on the right track for proper removal. Fortunately we were able to bypass that entire process.

One of the benefits of painting an entire home interior at once is the ability to create a “color story” or plan for the way that color will flow from room to room. By creating a color story, you can figure out how to best complement each space with the color of the walls. Even if you plan on painting your home in various shades of white or off-white, there is still a fair amount of planning that should go into the project to ensure that you get the results you want.
