We used a simple hand sander to do this. A lot of the chipped paint also came off when we were washing the house.
But every old home needs maintenance, updates or a refresh every few years or so. Paint is one of the best ways to give an old home new life while still retaining the integrity of the home. Painting an old home, however, is often accompanied by its own set of challenges which can range from small (tricky corners and trim) to large (replacing and repairing damaged walls or wood).
.
For example, in the basement paints may come into contact with damp concrete and water vapor can make its way through brick, stucco, fiber cement, cinder block, etc. When this happens it often flakes and peels off due to the humid environment.

Create beautifully unique effects on walls and furniture with Behr's line up of decorative finishes.
I had the exterior of my house painted by Lance, Israel, and Alejandro from ACP painting. They did a fantastic job. Walked the job with me each day and made sure I was happy with the work. Great group of guys to work with.
3,000 to 5,000+ square foot homes like this near Ponte Vedra and St. Johns, FL range from $7,800 to $12,000 and up.
So far our best purchase has been the shop vac sanding attachment (around $35 from amazon); with a HEPA filter in the vac, we’re getting no sanding dust in the house.

If you are doing your exterior painting yourself, a good estimate is to plan on 4-8 hours for a smaller home, 6-12 for a larger home, and 8-16 for a big home.
Another option for exterior paint build up is to have all the old paint stripped down to bare wood, primed and painted so all surfaces look nearly new and relatively smooth. This is a very time consuming, labor intensive and expensive process so your budget will drive the decision process.
As shown above, the cost of painting a home varies greatly and this presents you with different opportunities to reduce the expenses. Much of it depends on preparations that you can take beforehand, such as: Not delaying a repaint too long: The longer that the painters have to spend to paint your home, the higher they would charge. This is why getting your home repainted before any major visible problem appears can cut down on the costs greatly. Take up DIY solutions: You may take care of some of the preparation stages, such as trimming the shrubs, patching, sanding, clearing the perimeter, etc. Thus, the painters would have to spend less effort and would charge you less. Choose the color smartly: Be strategic while picking the color of the paint. A bright color might require multiple layers unless you choose a specific paint type which reduces the number of necessary coats. You might also want to avoid dark colors on the exterior as they fade out quickly and require frequent repaints.
Using our paint calculation formula, 5 gallons of paint should be sufficient to cover 2,000 square feet.
Generally speaking, in order to be considered a contractor, there are standards and minimum requirements that must be met. But a professional painting contractor provides so much more than what’s standard!
The last thing you want to realize part way through a paint job is that the painting contractors you hired isn’t the professional they told you they were. The best way to make sure this doesn’t happen is ask for the company’s licenses, if they don’t provide them on their own. Local and state licenses are certified proof that a painting contractor is legitimate and knows what he is doing. This way, you’ll have peace of mind that you are aren’t getting scammed and are working with a reputable company.
